As I prepare to write the next section of my new novel, I’m finding myself needing to do quite a bit of additional location research. I mentioned the other day that I was in Chicago to get a better idea of the setting for this next part, and while I was down there I took quite a bunch of photos.

My main character is going to be basically traveling from the Shedd Aquarium to the near west side of Chicago, via Roosevelt – on foot. I’d already spent some time on Google Maps and Earth checking out the trip, but it just didn’t seem to get me the kind of detail I needed to be able to write this part of the story as believably as I want to. So, I took a trip down Roosevelt and snapped a bunch of photos along the way. They’re all printed out and in a photo album for me to browse through easily while I write, but I thought I’d share some of them here for you to check out as well.

You’ll notice that I took the trip in a car. I would have liked to walk the whole thing, but frankly didn’t have the time. I do have a few pages of notes to go along with the photos as well. Also, I took them with a cell phone, so don’t expect works of art. 🙂

Now the hard part will be doing my best to imagine this whole stretch of road about 30-40 years in the future, having been completely abandoned and taken over by nature.
