Celluloid Cowboy: What Indie Publishing is For

Celluloid CowboyWith the experiences I’ve had so far as an independent author, I’ve come across quite a few like-minded individuals. The problem is that some of them aren’t that great at writing something that grabs me (sorry, but it’s true). Some of them, however, are.  This is where Scott C. Rogers falls with his debut, Celluloid Cowboy.

To be honest, at first I really wasn’t very interested in reading his book. The cover art definitely screamed indie, and the premise seemed a bit cliche (man’s life sucks, is presented with chance to change), and I am also usually pretty wary of author’s soliciting their works to me to read.  (I already have quite a few books on my to-read list.)  But Rogers and I emailed back and forth a few times (full disclosure here) and I told him that if he put it up on Kindle I’d maybe read it.  He did, he emailed me, and I went ahead and read it.

The thing is, this really isn’t my kind of book.  From some of the reviews out there he supposedly has some similarities to Bukowski, who I’ve never really cared enough about to read (and therefore can’t comment as to if he really is like Bukowski).  I will say this though: Celluloid Cowboy is really damn weird. Why I Don’t Like Reading Books

As a person who loves reading and has bought and read literally thousands of books, I never thought I’d say it, but I don’t like reading books anymore. It’s not that I don’t enjoy reading stories, or novels, nonfiction, etc. – it’s that I don’t like reading books.  That’s right, the ink-on-paper all bound in one big lump of dead tree things.  I can’t stand them.

Ever since getting my Kindle I’ve become more and more accustomed to reading on its e-ink display. For a while it was all I read on (other than the computer, but I refuse to read full-length novels on a computer screen). Sure, at first it took a bit of getting used to: holding a hunk of plastic and not having the feel of paper beneath my fingers, but when I started reading a new book (who shall remain nameless), it simply was not available for Kindle – so I had to read it in dead-tree form.  I hated it.

#1 Reason to Buy an Amazon Kindle

The other day I wrote a post about seven reasons to buy a Kindle from Amazon.  Today I’m adding one more reason to the list – and as far as I’m concerned it’s the most important reason of all.

No, it’s not Oprah’s recent recommendation/endorsement.

Seven Reasons to Buy a Kindle from Amazon

As stated in an earlier post back when I was still using beinggod.com for regular updates, I finally decided to go ahead and order a Kindle from Amazon.  Since this was my first time going the e-reader route, I did decide to try the safe route, and went with a free trial offer I received as a Prime member.

Now that I’ve had my Kindle for a few weeks, it’s time to share my thoughts – and why I recommend one for anybody who does even a fair amount of reading.  Rather than go with an exhaustive review, however, I’ve decided to narrow it down to seven reasons to buy a Kindle. (Not necessarily the seven best reasons either – just seven really good reasons).
